Coogee to bondi walk

Lido style swimming pool on the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee cliff walk. This excellent urban hike is a perfect alternative to the more obvious sights of Sydney and offers a different face to the city many miss out or don't know about. It takes about 2 hours along decked or flagged footpaths, you don't need a map, just follow the obvious route. There are a couple of beach cafes along the way.

The route follows some dramatic cliff top scenery with roaring waves below crashing into the cliffs. You also get a chance to peek into the awesome cliff to appartments of the rich. It takes in the bays of Tamarama, Bronte and Coogee which are all distincively different. Tamarama beach was particularly nice, sheltered and had an ice cream shop which was welcome in the seering sun. There are several excellent saline swimming pools along the route so make sure you bring your swimmers.

Aborignal buskers on Circular Quay playing didgeridoos for the tourists. Slightly less tacky is Gavala Aboriginal Arts Centre in darling harbour which offers free shows about the aboriginal history and instruments they play. It takes about half an hour and is very informative about life in the outback and the traditions attached to the didgeridoos plus what the tunes played on them actually mean. Once it is all explained you realise that all the sounds made are meant to mimic animal life and natural features of Australia.

Sydney Harbour from Taronga Zoo. The zoo is a great escape from the hubub of city sightseeing. Take a boat from circular quay and enjoy a trip accross the harbour. Make sure you see the bird show which is excellent. No holiday to Australia is complete without a close encounter with the wildlife. Of course there are plenty of opportunities to see many of the indigineous species of Australia at Taronga Zoo, not to mention cuddling a Koala and getting close up with kangaroos which are roaming free inside an enclosure which you are welcome to enter.

The Bearded Mining Company in Reefton is an amusing endeavour to amuse the tourists. A recreation of a traditional miners hut with opportunity to try panning for gold and watch a gold nugget being cast. You can even take a 'gold' nugget home with you for $5.

The amusing proprietors take a rather tongue in cheek approach to their venture. They quite clearly do it just for love and beer money which means they are more than happy to have a yarn and explain some of the finer details of mining in the Buller District. We can personally recommend Sunflower Units in Linkwater as a place to stay. They are run by a friendly German couple who settled in the area several years ago. They now run a small farmlet which has a few cows, chooks and sheep set in the middle of a peaceul valley overlooking Queen Charlotte Sound. We have stayed there twice and thorughly enjoyed being able to explore Picton and Havelock.

Castle Rock is set half way between Christchurch and Hokitika in the Arthurs Pass national park. Close to the road so it is an excellent half hour excursion for even the most timid traveller. These curious limestone formations have developed over millions of years of errosion from rain. It is a mecca for solo climbing and bouldering which is quite fascinating to observe.

The Banks Peninsula from Akaroa Harbour on a stunning sunny day. Temperatures in the bay are consistently higher than in nearby Christchurch, rainfall much lower so it is a great place to escape an average day from the city.

There is a small safe swimming beach, pier and array of wonderful little shops to browse. Several excellent cafes and a hanful of resaurants are worth a look.

Boat excursions can be taken from the pier to see Akaroa bay and the Banks Peninsula as well as Hectors dolphins. The trips usually leave just after midday and last several hours.

It is possible to buy fish on the quayside here at Akaroa which is a real treat. Rarely these days do you get fish so delicously fresh. The waters off New Zealand are unpolluted and produce wonderful fresh fish such as Akaroa Blue Cod, Hoki and snapper.

If you really love your fish you must make the effort to get down to Fleurs place which is nationally famous for its fish and located towards Dunedin at Moeraki where the Moeraki Boulders are also found.

Whale Watch Helicopter flights

Holiday makers leave by helicopter to go whale watching in kaikoura. This is one of the best and fastest ways to see these graceful creatures but these trips are more weather dependant than the Whale Watch boats. Trips last about half an hour which is ideal if your schedule is tight.

Kaikoura peninsula track

View from the Kaikoura peninsula track which leads from the seal colony to South Bay where you can watch fishermen and the Whale Watch boats setting off. South Bay is also a great location for safe swimming. The walk will take between 2-3 hours and is an ideal thing to do if you are waiting for the weather to calm ready for a dolphin or whale trip.

The track either takes a cliff top route offering elevated views of the sea and Kaikoura mountain ranges or you may opt for a low tide route along the foot of the cliffs which creeps safely around level rocky beaches and shaley bays. The colour of the water and the cleanliness of the beaches is outstanding. Keep your eye out for small fossils on the beaches which come from the erosion of the limestone cliffs.

There are no shops in south bay nor places to eat out so make sure if you are making a day of it take a packed lunch and plenty of drink with you.

New Zealand fur seal basks in the midday sun at the seal colony on the peninsula at Kaikoura. It is possible to see seals safely every day on this limestone platform which is revealed at low tide.

The Banks Peninsula is a sun trap close to Christchurch, New Zealand. This beach is scattered with semi precious stones and lined with characterful baches (kiwi holiday homes). It is an ideal stop off on the way to Akaroa being about half way.

After visiting the beach make sure you pay a visit to the Little River art gallery which is ten minutes further towards Akaroa. Not only is this one of the best art outlets in the region, it also serves the most amazing cakes and savoury food.

Situated on the main south road just north of Kaikoura is the world famous (in New Zealand) crayfish cabin selling fresh local lobster. The best place to get Cray fish on the east coast since 1977, cheaper and fresher than the outlets in town, it is the only place to truly savour this local delicacy. Priced from as little as $25NZ this must be one of the cheapest places anywhere to sample lobster. If you are heading north to Malborough, or south to Kaikoura you can't miss it, set inches from the sea with the waves lapping.

Kekerengu Stores is an oasis on the main south road between Kaikoura and Malborough. It seems a fairly long way through relatively unispiring landscape (compared to what you may have already seen) and the cafe in the stores is just mouthwatering heaven. It is a must, you will see why when you visit.

New Regent Street Christchurch New Zealand

To many Christchurch is just the city where the airport is. In many respects after several weeks of stunning, even mind blowing scenery Christchurch just isn't that exciting. New Regent Street in the city centre is worthy of a peek. It is easy to find, just jump on the tourist tram which does a loop of the city taking in most of the few sights the city has to offer. Be sure to actually get of at Christchurch Arts Centre and whilst there also visit the free Christchurch Art Gallery.

The arts centre has a craft market on Saturday and Sunday which has some good stalls. The arts centre has some excellent outlets specialising in wood, embroidery and patchwork, handspun wool, weaving and art works. There are regular exhibitions and outdoor entertainers most weekends.

The new art gallery is a superb building which has only recently been completed. It has some good examples of european Moari portraits, paintings by early settlers and a variety of european classical style pieces.

Sunset, Punakaiki

The west coast of New Zealand, particularly Punakaiki, seems blessed with some stunning sunsets. We have spent many enjoyable evenings sipping on a glass of NZ Reisling on the steps of our favourite accommodation Wave Watchers. It is simply one of the best self catering establishments we have stayed in anywhwere in the country. Pricey, and worth it.

Punakaiki is one of the best places on the West Coast of New Zealand to break your journey if you are looking for a perfect kiwi experience. Long unspoilt mostly deserted beaches strewn with drift wood from the expanses of rain forest. There is one pub in Punakaiki which gets busy during peak periods. Get there early if you are planning on eating. The food is very good standard kiwi pub grub, the sea food is worth a look.

There is limited accommodation in Punakaiki, more than most villages in New Zealand so you are well advised to book early, even before your visit if you are coming from overseas.

Lyttleton was the hub for settlement on the south island over 150 years ago. They place all the unsightly or noisy stuff over here so the developing city was cleaner. So the port, goal (jail), lepper colony and working classes stayed here. Christchurch was esatblished with a strict class structure. It still feels a lot like it exists here today, unlike the rest of New Zealand which is far more laid back.
